Why I Still Teach Literature

Why I Still Teach LiteratureHigh school students almost always groan when they hear that we’re doing a course on Shakespeare or the Divine Comedy this semester. I always hear protests about “why do we need to know that? How will that help us during adult life?” What most students don’t realize is that I am doing this to help them to be literate and knowledgeable. It may be hard to see it now, but literature has a huge effect on how a student will do in the future. I want to talk about a few reasons that literature helps us, not just for our careers but for our whole lives.

Reading Comprehension

Most of the time, students try to get away with reading some abridged version of the book that I’ve assigned them. In doing that, they’re cheating themselves out of a valuable skill. Learning how to sit down and read a long book is a skill that will pay itself back 100 times over. If you can learn to love reading, you will love learning. And in this economy, people that hate to learn are the first to be out of work. Our economy is one of information now, so if you don’t have much information you won’t have much of a good life. Sadly, I think this is much like sports; if you don’t invest in your body now, it will be too late by the time you’re 60 to start getting fit. Patio Sport.Com has a variety of sports equipment to help you stay fit, which keeps your mind sharp at the same time. Reading can also stave off Alzheimer’s Disease; you keep your mind sharp-which guarantees that learning pathways in the brain don’t atrophy.

Writing Comprehension

English class doesn’t stop at just reading; it moves on to writing as well. The most important part of reading is being able to interact with it. If you just read and don’t know how to respond to what you’ve read, you might as well not have read it. It won’t be any use to you. It’s like trying to play badminton without a badminton racquet. Students don’t like to do it, but it is a skill you will need to know later. For example, if you ever want to go into an engineering, sales, recruitment, or legal profession and are bad with reading comprehension, you need to do something else.

Reading as a Hobby

If reading isn’t your thing, I understand. However, you’re missing out on a great hobby. Smartphones are a great invention, but using them a lot can make it hard to focus on long and difficult reading. Lots of people avoid reading just because it is difficult; it definitely takes longer, but I don’t think it’s any harder if you put in the focus to learn. Just because something takes time doesn’t mean you should try it. If you can put the time in, reading is a wonderful hobby because it forces you to use different parts of your brain in order to enjoy the story.

Never Stop Learning

Lady reading a book outsideWe have spoken a number of times in the past about the importance of education. After all, we are teachers and apart from education being our livelihood, it is also our passion. Nothing pleases a good teacher more than seeing his students graduate successfully and make his way into the working world without much ado. But we’d like to emphasize the importance of lifelong learning. After you’ve received your college degree do not take it for granted that this is where it all stops. You still have the rest of your life ahead of you and the Lord alone knows how long you will be living.

Prepare yourself for the real job for life

Today’s sociological and economic circumstances should compel you to consider higher learning in order to enhance your career prospects going forward. Those who are fortunate enough to attain entry-level jobs after college graduation soon learn to regret their acceptance that this may be their job for life. In today’s climate, it rarely is. Where job security is concerned, your perceived good fortune may continue for a number of years. But not much else changes.  Why is this?

While you may have (short-term) job security, security in many other areas of your life tells a different story. Your wages or salaries or not likely to increase substantially for you to enhance the quality of your life, provide your own children with a higher standard of education or make generous long-term savings for your future. This is due to a number of sociological and economic factors. Economically, the country remains challenged with near-zero inflation and interest rates, and sluggish gross domestic product and job growth generally. Across States, there are some exceptions.

Re-educate to improve the quality of your life

To emphasize the importance of further learning, we are going to picture a broad-based scenario. In order to find meaningful work and to survive, many migrants, cross-border and from rural regions, are trekking to urban environments at increased rates every year. But while this is not noticed, mainly because the numbers are so small, there are people moving in the opposite direction. Ask anyone who has had the opportunity to take a holiday to country towns. Did they tell you how happy the townsfolk seem to be?

And because they are far removed from urban centers, rural townsfolk have prepared themselves well ahead of time. Well-educated and having been through the mill where careers are concerned, these middle-aged to senior (pension) aged folks, have taught themselves new skills and attended workshops to equip themselves with these skills. It would not be unusual to see a former college professor or business administration manager handle a large, multipurpose wood lathe during the course of his building exercises, whether for domestic or commercial use. For folks such as these, quality of life turned out to be more important than just having a job to go to everyday.

In order to improve their quality of life, not just their bank balance, these well-educated men and women, re-educated themselves and relocated.

Strategies to Increase Your Critical Thinking

Strategies to Increase Your Critical ThinkingThe human brain is truly an incredible thing. Once we put our minds to it, we can do anything we want to. It just takes a bit more thinking to start improving on any skill we might have. Improving on a skill won’t magically happen by itself; people have to put the time and effort in in order to improve on themselves. By following certain strategies, any person with a drive to improve or work on something, can mentally develop as a thinker. Below we’ll explain three of these strategies, and how you can apply these to yourself to increase your critical thinking.

1) Another Day, Another Problem

Whenever you have some free time, be it at the beginning of the day, on your lunch break, at the end of the day, or even in the middle of the night, think of a problem that you could potentially solve. It could be anything to do within your daily life, your family, somebody around you, something that you’re doing, an object – literally anything – and starting questioning the aspects about it. What is the problem? Why is it a problem? By solving it, how does it relate to what you want to achieve? How does it help you accomplish your goals?

Make sure to study your problem so you learn what every aspect of it is.  Be clear on what it is you are solving. Think about whether or not you have control over the problem, and if not, can you solve this problem otherwise? Do however focus more on the problems you can solve, as you will feel a sense of accomplishment once they are completed. If necessary, carry out some independent research in order to solve your problem. Make sure to examine and investigate the research you’ve collected, and use it to figure out your solution.

Once you’ve found any information you need, and learnt your problem inside and out, start to think about your options. Which solution is best for you? Are there advantages or disadvantages to your solutions? Think through a strategic approach to solving your problem, and follow through with it. This may vary on your problem, but the strategy may take time or it may be something you can solve instantly. Once the problem starts to be resolved, record the results of your actions, and monitor what effect they’re having on you.

Strategically thinking through one problem per day allows you to open up your mind and consider every aspect of something, rather than a primary focus. You can apply this method to everything else in life as well.

2) Write a logical diary

Aim to write a certain amount of diary entries each week. Don’t just write a general diary though about how you’re feeling and what has happened, but focus on particular situations. Has anything happened to affect you in a specific way – did something have an emotional significance on you? Ensure to abide by the following structure, keeping the same pattern too:

  1. The situation – by focusing on one at a time, write about something that you care about, something that has impacted on you in a certain way. Be as detailed or as brief as you feel is necessary to the situation.
  2. The response – how did the situation make you feel? What emotions did you encounter? Was there any action you took to this situation? Describe everything you felt and did from it, and be as detailed as possible.
  3. The analysis – Think deeper into what happened in the situation. What exactly was going on? Is there a certain part of the situation that you can identify with that makes you feel a specific emotion? Is there something going on between you and whatever happened in the situation? Really think about the cause and effect of it.
  4. The assessment – Reflect on your analysis. What did you find? Did you do some learning in the process? Upon revisiting the situation, what would you do differently? Would you do anything differently?

You should find in this strategy that you will think deeper about yourself, and what you feel and react to certain things. This strategy really focuses on you and your reaction to environmental factors, and how to go about them if they’ve upset you. This can be applied to anything in your daily life, and can be passed on as valuable advice.

3) Redefine your personality

Consider an intellectual characteristic: humility, empathy, perseverance, integrity, courage, etc. Choose one trait to focus on per month, and focus on how you can develop this trait to enhance your character.

For example, if it’s intellectual integrity you’ve chosen to focus on, you might start to think about how to be true to your thinking. Consider how you react to others, and how you would feel if they reacted to you in the same way. As the proverb goes, ‘Treat others how you wish to be treated’. Start to notice when you feel uncomfortable with how others are treating you – have you treated them in the same way? By focusing on your reactions to others’ actions, you will start to think about your own. You’ll start to think about your actions and the consequences of them, before you act them out. This’ll make you think in a critical way of cause and effect – for example, if you react in a certain way, what will be the effect on others and yourself?

Each month you’ll find that you’ll see things in a different light – you’ll start to improve on yourself. Thinking in this strategic method gives you a chance to reflect on yourself, as well as monitoring your character. With this, you can start to take responsibility for your actions, and put right what was wrong.

Literacy vs. the right education

Literacy vs. the right educationThere is no substitution for education. Education is something that will be the best possessed stuff you can ever possess in your lifetime and which could never go away. The knowledge of a person is like a vessel with a magic spell that would never go empty no matter how much you take stuffs out of it. It is something no snatcher could snatch or no robber could rob. Yet education is the most neglected piece of possession in many parts of the world and thus we see how the world is going towards self destruction.

Literacy and the right education are two different things that one must understand. It may be the case that you are literate but still if you do not have the right education then your knowledge will not flourish and you can never become a true human being.

Knowledge and education goes hand in hand. The right knowledge will educate you with the basic and the most valuable lessons of your live. And this will come from not the best education institutions but form the parents itself. The brain of a small child is like a moldable sponge. You can form whatever shape you want to form. It will become how you treat it in its early days. Children are like sponge and they absorb whatever they see and understand in their surroundings. They collect these in formations and feed them to their system and ultimate develop them surrounding them making those memories from their childhood as the most idealistic. Thus it is the duty of the parents to give the children the right set of ideals to grow up. Thus the most essential thing we need is not the best institutions but the right kind of education.

Education and the knowledge to do the right stuff are like the digital multimeters from http://multimeterreport.com/ in our lives. They keep a tap on our path that we are pursuing and constantly ask us the question if we are doing the right thing or not. It is in constant conversation to our conscience and helps us thus becoming a better man. If we just look around the present condition all over the world, what we see really shivers us. The people or agents of death, agents of utmost inhumanity are sometimes found to be much educated and qualified and certified technicians in their fields, yet can we surely tell that these people despite having one or many highly qualifying degrees of literacy have the right kind of education? Well, the question is wide open for all.

What is the call of the hour is that we should become much more than just literates. We should pursue knowledge that will have the right impact on the society and help not only in our progress but for the progress of the whole society and entire humanity at large. We must not forget that we are not just the stake holders in the community or the society we live in but we are the cause of the community or society as they flourish and are portrayed in the world stage as we behave, in form of our actions and words.

Benefits of Arts and Crafts for Children

Benefits of Arts and Crafts for ChildrenIn most schools, arts and crafts are completely secondary, while some forms of academic subjects take precedent over them. This is a shame and here is why. Appropriate craft activities are a great aid in the development of children and can be of great use when developing various areas of the brain which are later used for learning languages, doing social studies, various sciences, etc. They also play an important role in the health of the child – both physical and mental. Here are just a few benefits of crafts for small children.

  1. Fine Motor Skills

If they want to draw nicely, children need to focus and learn to control their movements precisely. By doing this often, they develop extremely good fine motor skills, which can later help them if they want to choose an occupation which demands these types of skills. One of the most famous areas where these skills are imperative is surgery. So the next time your child asks to draw, just imagine it as a step towards their becoming a world-class surgeon and you won’t be able to say no.

  1. Bilateral coordination

Various crafts such as colouring and cutting force the child to use both hands at the same time. This helps them develop bilateral coordination, which is later useful for a range of actions such as typing, writing, moving things, tying shoes and more. And it’s a shame children don’t get to finely develop this skill, since the equipment for these types of crafts is cheap and easy to come by. You don’t have to go looking for a powerful tool at sites like beltsanderworld.Com, you just need some small scissors, some crayons and paper.

  1. Bonding

Crafts are a great way for shy children to bond with their peers and parents. If you want to develop a special relationship with your child, joining them in doing crafts or teaching them something new is a great way to accomplish that. Just keep one thing in mind. When choosing an activity, make sure it’s suitable to your child’s age. If you start building a huge dog house with your 3-year-old, your child won’t be able to use the tools like this one which are necessary for the job, and will quickly become frustrated. Instead, chose a craft such as making paper snowflakes which the child can easily learn to do.

  1. Project Completion

An often overlooked benefit of doing crafts is learning to complete a project. The consequences of not imparting this knowledge and these habits on kids are visible in today’s adults. How many people do you know who are constantly starting new projects and never finishing any? A lot? We thought so. When a child starts a crafts project, they should be learning to complete it. With the aid of the parent or teacher, the child should successfully complete the task and see the fruit of their work. If that happens, that child will grow up to be an adult who finishes the work they start. And that is definitely an important factor in being successful!

Importance Of Skin Care

Importance Of Skin CareOne of our members, Anne was late for our weekly meeting. Since she was always punctual and the first one to be there, we were curious and she looked pretty upset too. It turned out that Anne’s cousin had been recently diagnosed with skin cancer and a severe one at that. We all expressed our concern and since it is a common enough disease, we all knew about it. We got to talk about how it is important to take care of our skin.

While using beauty care products is common enough among women and men too, they do not give much attention to the actual skin care products. Choosing the right cleansers, sunscreens and moisturizers helps in keeping many skin conditions at bay. Here are some important reasons on why skin care should be given priority.

Anti-ageing effect

With the appropriate skin care methods, you can reduce the effect of aging on your skin. You have several herbal preparations that help in taking care of skin cell rejuvenation. And there are non-invasive treatment methods – with the help of nice microdermabrasion machines you could reduce wrinkle and blemishes on skin.  While aging is inevitable part of our lives, we can however delay the aging process with the right skin care methods.

Cleansing

It is not enough to clean your face with just soap and water. You should remove all the dirt, makeup products and other unwanted things that accumulate on your face. A deep cleansing agent is necessary to get your face squeaky clean and healthy looking.

Cleaning up pores

The skin pores need to be cleaned and free of dust, dirt and oil to give your skin a glowing and healthy look. The main cause of acne, which is common to all age groups, is because of the infection occurring in clogged pores.

Detoxification

It is necessary to detoxify the skin to remove the toxins from your skin and body. For this, special treatments may be necessary. But regular and effective skin care in itself helps to keep your skin safe from the toxic effects it is exposed to.

Self-confidence

When you have a healthy and vibrant skin, you will have great self-confidence. Right selection of skin care treatments such as the MICRODERMMD helps your skin lose its blemishes, scars, and imperfections and brings back its radiant glow.

Stress free time

We are unfortunate enough to live at a time where stress is part and parcel of our lives.  Sometimes you get tired even before your day starts. But with an excellently put together face mask, you can get miraculous effects that not only take care of your skin but also perks up your mood and personal attitude.

Blood circulation

With the appropriate skin care methods and products, you can help in improving the blood circulation to your skin. This helps to keep it healthy.

Glowing skin

One way to show your healthy state is having a glowing skin. Your skin looks appealing, and this can be achieved with routine and proper skin care.

Benefits of Prosperity Parenting

Benefits of Prosperity ParentingGroucho Marx has been quoted as saying, “While money can’t buy happiness, it certainly lets you choose your own form of misery.” Really, lots of people in media like songs, movies, television shows and more go on and on about how money can’t buy happiness, money can’t buy love, money isn’t as great as everyone thinks it is, etc. These statements are true. If someone is only hanging out with you because you have money, or if you’re keeping yourself in high spirits by constantly buying new, expensive toys, then you probably aren’t experiencing anything like real love or happiness.

However, while money can’t buy these things, it does still have some fantastic uses. It can help to make you and the people around you feel more secure, which is never a bad thing. If your bills, mortgage or rent, utilities and other monthly expenses are all taken care of, you don’t have to worry about them. It’s hard to say with any certainty how many domestic fights can draw their roots back to money, but it’s a fact that married people argue about finances and funds more often than anything else. If the absence of money can lead to such misery, then money must be good for something at least, right?

Prosperity parenting is about more than just possessing wealth, however. It’s also about ingraining a desire for that same wealth in your children, putting something in them now so they’ll work hard when they’re older to be successful, happy people. Parents affect their children in so many ways there are some times when they don’t even realize they’re setting an example. However, you should know that your children are always listening to you, looking to you for cues on the ways they should speak, the ways they should act, even the ways they should think about the world around them.

If you want your children to seek prosperity when they come of age, take care responsibility of your words, in the present. If you tell yourself things like, “Everything costs too much,” or, “I hate my job,” your children might grow up thinking the good things in life will always be out of their reach, or that it’s a normal thing to be stuck in a job they hate, since they grew up watching their parents in a similar situation. We have a greater effect on the grown men and women our young boys and girls will eventually be than we realize.

The benefits of bringing up your children to seek out prosperity rather than shun it should be obvious. For starters, they’ll be much more likely to become independently wealthy rather than relying on you for money once they’re fully grown and able to fend for themselves. Now, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with supporting your children – you don’t stop being a mother or father just because the little one stops being quite so little. But to really be a success as a parent, it would be best if you gave your child the tools he or she needs to also become a success.

There’s a relatively small window of time in which to pass on these positive or negative beliefs relating to prosperity, as well. Numerous scientific studies have shown that, in general, an individual is more or less who they will be for the rest of their lives by the time they have reached the age of 10. That’s not to say a meek child won’t one day become bold, or that a rambunctious little terror will never become a responsible adult, but these things don’t typically happen; the good kids stay good and the bad kids stay bad, so to speak. This is just the way we are as a species.

This is why it’s so important to give your children a positive view of prosperity while they are young and still developing their minds and their views of the world around them. Creating a positive vision of prosperity will be helpful to your children because they’ll grow up seeing it as something they want. If it’s a good thing, a desirable thing, they might work for it in their lifetime. If it’s a bad thing, or something to avoid, or something that just causes stress, they’ll probably try to steer clear of it, like anyone would try to stay away from a live bear trap or an active volcano.

What are the benefits here? Well, besides having more money of your own since your children will hopefully be asking for less, you also help them to make more money of their own, which can in turn lead to them being able to take better care of their own children, should they have any. You could create a multi-generational, positive influence by going out of your way to paint prosperity in a positive light today. In the same way one highly negative individual can make multiple generations of a family look bad, an exceptionally positive one can improve the perceptions and outlooks of everyone.

A big part of developing new hobbies and habits is training yourself to make these new, strange activities more common and a regular part of your life. Start the day off by telling yourself something positive rather than something negative. This is a simple step, and it might not sound like it would make a big difference, but many large changes have been causes by an aggregate of many small, steady steps. This presents another unique opportunity to teach your kids something important – that nothing worthwhile in this world comes to you without a consistent effort.

There are really too many benefits to prosperity parenting to list them all here. In fact, just think of all the negative consequences which exist in filling your child’s head with a hatred for wealth and prosperity, and then flip everything over onto its opposite end, and that’s what you can look forward to if you start this today. There are other resources on the subject available, so be sure to read more about it if it piques your interest.

Aiming for Personal Responsibility

Aiming for Personal ResponsibilityOne of the things about teaching children and young adults everyday is that teachers know the value of personal responsibility and they often begin to see places to teach the value responsibility in their lives outside of work.  I recently had an opportunity to see how a young man was learning this value when I took a weekend trip hiking and camping at a popular site outside of town recently.

After I had set up my tent and relaxed for a bit, I decided to take a hike. Whole out in the countryside, I happened upon a young man and his father. They were both obviously very close and shared many interests in common, including an obvious love of the great outdoors. The father was teaching his son to shoot an air gun. I am very aware of how guns can be misused, but I am honestly not particularly knowledgeable or comfortable around them otherwise.

So, I was not sure what to do as a bystander who had happened upon them, but the father saw me almost immediately and told his son to put the gun down. They then were kind enough to say hello and introduce themselves to me. I asked what they were doing, and they both explained that the son wanted to learn to shoot and that the father and thought it best to get him actual lessons and to have him practice with him before letting him proceed any further with shooting.

Aiming for Personal ResponsibilityI asked the younger stranger about his decision to learn and what his lessons entailed and I was impressed by how well spoken and adult he sounded. His father was obviously proud of how he was able to articulate his reasons for wanting to learn to shoot, especially since it is sometimes a controversial issue. The young man obviously just wanted a basic knowledge and I have no doubt that he will be very careful and safe in the future. After I had become a little more comfortable with the meeting, I went on to ask him the model of his air gun. It was a Crossman M4 177, and he was obviously very proud of it even though it technically belong to his father.

After this very brief conversation, I said my goodbyes and went on my way. As I was leaving, I heard the father remind his pupil about some of the basics of gun safety before they proceeded. Later on, I saw them both near where the campsite as and we all had pitched out tents or parked our campers.

They greeted me warmly and even invited me to share in making s’mores with them over their campfire, and we continued our conversation from earlier and also chatted about the boy’s favorite subjects in school and his love of sports. It is always nice to see an example of good parenting, father and son bonding and the advocacy of personal responsibility in action. I wish them both the best.

Longboarding and Lessons

Longboarding and LessonsOne of the things that is necessary to becoming a good educator is finding a way to connect with students and to find points of interest and discussion with them. This can be a challenge when there are development and generational differences between the students and the teachers. Even more, educators need to be sure that these points of commonality that they emphasize are reinforce positive and healthy behaviors. Sports and outdoor recreation can be great place for finding ways to connect with students and to find points that can serve as “teachable moments” for young people.

Often we think of this through the lens of coaching team sports as a part of school’s extracurricular offerings. These team sports can and do reach many students in a positive way. However, extracurricular activities often do not appeal to the most difficult students and those who are in the most need of attention and outreach. This does not mean, however, that these students are often physically active and do participate in activities. The difference is that these are not school-sponsored and teachers often have very little knowledge of them.

One of the newest and most popular of these alternative sports is longboarding, so this post will focus on it as it is less-known among teachers than skateboarding but incredibly popular among teenagers and young adults. This is an activity that has grown exponentially in popularity among young people along with its sister sport, skateboarding. Just because longboarding is not a team sport does not mean that it does not have an active community surrounding it and even competitions. It does and many youth participate in local groups and competitions and have aspirations to achieve at a national level. This is precisely the goal setting and aspirational mindset that educators can encourage and expand to include success in school.

Of course, this requires at least a basic understanding of activities like skateboarding and longboarding on the part of the teachers. For example, it would be a good idea to have an idea of what a longboard looks like and how it is different form a skateboard. A good example of a popular longboard is the Sector 9 Natasha board, which clearly shows the unique shape and eye-catching art that is common to this equipment. After getting a handle on what longboards look like, it is is important to get a handle on how they are used and why they work the way that they do as well as some of the lingo and the “rules of the road.”

Rather than provide this information here, educators can turn to the students they see riding a longboard or towing on in their lockers and use it as a point of entry for a conversation to learn more about that student and their interests. Simple questions like “Is that a longboard? How long have you been riding it?” or “Is there a skate park you go to?” can be ways of engaging students at their own levels.
