Active Bodies Promote Active Minds

Clock nearing the midnightHave you sometimes noticed how much you struggle to study at night? And when you’ve finally called it a night, have you noticed how restless your sleep was? You may be feeling the pressure, stressed to the limit thinking about the next morning’s exam or your overdue assignment.

Also, your young body has become tired of playing catch up. You are left wondering; how did it all come to this. You are also asking yourself; why did I allow it to happen. There can be many good reasons why you have not been copying with your college studies, and they weren’t always your fault.

Stop blaming yourself

Man in despairBut because you are essentially a mature and responsible young adult, you place all the blame on your shoulders. Stop what you are doing and take a deep breath. This will be a lesson in self-promotion.

Because you are responsible, you have other work to attend to. It drains you physically, mentally and emotionally. This is normal, given the circumstances we find ourselves in today.

Everyone has to work a little harder to keep up their ends. So, rest assured, you are not alone.

At this stage, do not stop to wonder how other successful students manage. Forget about the privileged students who only need to show up on time for classes every day. Stop watching others because chances are you may not be able to keep up anyway.

And what better way to do this than to get into shape. In order to get this right, you may need to make some sacrificial changes along the way. In any case, life is about to change for the better for you.

Improving mental health

Physical exercise is one of the best ways of improving your mental health which will also improve your ability to study effectively and achieve successful outcomes. Because you are a college student, you may also want to remain socially active. Take up a sport or two. Not sure where to start? You can visit websites such as these to find out how you can become involved and what you need to get started.

Sport is also a great way to relieve tension. So, perhaps you don’t have an inclination towards team sports. You can pursue the alternatives which allow you to spend more time on your own. You could join a boxing club and practice alone on punching bags. Or you could join a golf driving range and simply take swings whenever you’ve had a chance to get away from work or classes. Unless you are truly serious about maintaining your sense of direction during your time off or beginning to take your chosen sport seriously, you won’t need a GPS navigation system any day soon.

During bouts of physical exertion, the emphasis should always be on relaxation anyway. Just try regular brisk walks in your nearby park every other day and see what a difference it makes to you after a few weeks.

Healing Methods That Will Go Easier On Your Organism

Woman holding fruitsIt is a sad fact that we all have to go through some kind of illness or injury during the course of our lives, but it is nevertheless true. When we get sick, we usually surrender ourselves to doctors, believing they know what is best for us. Although we don’t know enough about our own bodies to make major decisions about our health, there are times in which it would be best to ask ourselves if the more invasive option really is the best one.

There is a large number of healing methods available, and the traditional ones, the ones we are used to, are usually the invasive ones. The ones that go easier on our bodies are mostly called alternative methods, but regardless of what they are called, we believe it might be in our best interest to take a closer look at some of them. Here is a list of a couple of methods that you might want to consider if you are currently suffering from an injury or illness.

This healing method has a really long history, and that should say something about its benefits. It uses very thin needles in order to stimulate those points that are closely connected to the health issue you as a patient are experiencing. It allows your body to start the healing process, and balances your energy as well.

The only method listed here that couldn’t be called alternative, electrotherapy is one of the least invasive, and yet effective healing methods. As explained on, it is a procedure that involves the use of an electrotherapy unit that sends electric current into your body to speed the healing process.

Although this method is mostly used in healing wounds, it can also make a world of difference when it comes to treating neurological diseases. In such cases, deep brain stimulators are used to make the human brain start the recovering process. The whole process is quite complex, but these electrotherapy units can sometimes be used at home as well. If you would like to find out more about them, click here.

Herbal medicine

This method, as its name suggests, uses plants as a way to heal your body. Experts in herbal medicine have a vast knowledge about the effects and benefits that particular plants have on the human organism, and use that knowledge to create a medicine appropriate for healing any given disease.

This is one of the more popular alternative healing methods, but also the one most people think of as being completely ineffective. It basically uses the healer’s and the patient’s natural energy in order to jump start the healing process.

Magnetic field therapy

Some believe that magnets have the ability to heal living beings, and that it has something to do with the way they disrupt our natural energy. Although there is no evidence that can support this in general, some studies have shown that transcranial magnetic stimulation in particular can result in the recovery of patients who have suffered a stroke.

Benefits of Arts and Crafts for Children

Benefits of Arts and Crafts for ChildrenIn most schools, arts and crafts are completely secondary, while some forms of academic subjects take precedent over them. This is a shame and here is why. Appropriate craft activities are a great aid in the development of children and can be of great use when developing various areas of the brain which are later used for learning languages, doing social studies, various sciences, etc. They also play an important role in the health of the child – both physical and mental. Here are just a few benefits of crafts for small children.

  1. Fine Motor Skills

If they want to draw nicely, children need to focus and learn to control their movements precisely. By doing this often, they develop extremely good fine motor skills, which can later help them if they want to choose an occupation which demands these types of skills. One of the most famous areas where these skills are imperative is surgery. So the next time your child asks to draw, just imagine it as a step towards their becoming a world-class surgeon and you won’t be able to say no.

  1. Bilateral coordination

Various crafts such as colouring and cutting force the child to use both hands at the same time. This helps them develop bilateral coordination, which is later useful for a range of actions such as typing, writing, moving things, tying shoes and more. And it’s a shame children don’t get to finely develop this skill, since the equipment for these types of crafts is cheap and easy to come by. You don’t have to go looking for a powerful tool at sites like beltsanderworld.Com, you just need some small scissors, some crayons and paper.

  1. Bonding

Crafts are a great way for shy children to bond with their peers and parents. If you want to develop a special relationship with your child, joining them in doing crafts or teaching them something new is a great way to accomplish that. Just keep one thing in mind. When choosing an activity, make sure it’s suitable to your child’s age. If you start building a huge dog house with your 3-year-old, your child won’t be able to use the tools like this one which are necessary for the job, and will quickly become frustrated. Instead, chose a craft such as making paper snowflakes which the child can easily learn to do.

  1. Project Completion

An often overlooked benefit of doing crafts is learning to complete a project. The consequences of not imparting this knowledge and these habits on kids are visible in today’s adults. How many people do you know who are constantly starting new projects and never finishing any? A lot? We thought so. When a child starts a crafts project, they should be learning to complete it. With the aid of the parent or teacher, the child should successfully complete the task and see the fruit of their work. If that happens, that child will grow up to be an adult who finishes the work they start. And that is definitely an important factor in being successful!

Full-faced responsibilities

Full-faced responsibilitiesWe have often spoken about the challenges that today’s teachers and parents experience while bringing up and educating teenagers and young adults, particularly those who have already reached the critical age of twenty.

Also, what responsible adult has not heard a child between the ages of thirteen and twenty-one complain that life is very hard? Many high school and college students are already coming to terms with this; life is so much harder for them now that they are older, not because of the technological and multicultural environments they are exposed to, but mainly because they have so much more responsibilities in dealing with these new events.

Risk versus responsibility

We all agree that it was no different when we were younger but, truth be told, it is a lot more difficult for today’s youth who are faced with overwhelming odds, seemingly stacked up against them, and paradigm shifts in society and business that even their parents are finding difficult to cope with. The ultimate caveat remains that of bearing responsibility; for the things that have been thrust upon you, or taking responsibility for the consequences of your own actions whether they are correct or not.

Young or old; whether we live responsibly or not – thankfully, most of us do – we are also, by nature, risk takers. All we need do is take a look at the long list of great entrepreneurs and inspiring leaders, political, religious, or otherwise, who have dared to take risks that others could not, only to see positive results later, not just for themselves but more specifically for those who played it safe.

As we all know from experience, no matter what level of education we had the privilege of attaining, we were more willing to take risks when we were younger. But as we grew older we became more cautious. Ironically, this has a lot to do with the responsibilities that have been added to our lives.

Ditching safety for fashion and fads

Young men and women like doing daring things, such as riding motorcycles without helmets. And even when they do, the young riders are more concerned with image than safety. There is little regard for the dangers on the road in spite of the overwhelming and grim statistics that point this out.

In the last few years, technological advances have fascinated the youth to no end. If you take a look at the information on motorcycle helmets here you will see that technology has also influenced the way helmets have been designed and manufactured. Here, we are not talking about the essential features of aerodynamics and safety standards. We are talking about the inherent entertainment value that technology has given the youth. For instance, instead of prizing the highly recommended and universally accepted full face helmets, young men may go for helmets packaged with Bluetooth tech features which distract them from the real business of responsible road use.

That being said, if we are to ensure our growing future leaders’ safety now, do we need to exercise responsibility on our part and remain over-protective of them?

Reasons Why Green Tea Is Good For You

Reasons Why Green Tea Is Good For YouDid you know that taking some foods can help you in the pursuit to lose weight; though they may not be really effective when taken alone but coupled with other weight losing methods such as daily workouts the results would be faster. One of these foods is green tea.

Drinking a cup or two of green tea everyday will go a long way not only to help you reduce your weight, but give you multiple health benefits.  Green tea is rich in bioactive antioxidants such as caffeine and catechin; it is through the combined benefits of these two that helps reduce your body weight. How? You may ask, here some of the key reasons;

Green tea is known to mildly suppress someone’s appetite you are likely to take less food daily translating to lower daily calorie intake; this means that you will eventually lose weight since the body has to burn more stored fats for daily energy.

Caffeine is classified as a mild stimulant hence when you take green tea you body will be more active, this signifies that you are likely to burn more fats after taking the green tea than you did before. You are also more stimulated to perform more tasks than before hence the end result will be a gradual decline of your weight, overtime. Caffeine also stimulates the brain to give you better brain function.

Catechin on the other hand is responsible for boosting metabolism specifically through thermogenesis. Your body loves to store fat like a sturdy gun safe. The presence of catechin in the blood stream stimulates body cells to break down body fats as a source of body heat (the process of thermogenesis); hence ensuring reduction in your cholesterol levels. Taking green tea and doing workout activities such as boxing, martial arts such as taekwondo, karate and other physically demanding activities is likely to give you that light body weight that most of us crave for.

Green tea also has diuretic properties in that it helps speeding the process of removal of excess body water, since water constitutes a great percentage of our bodies total weight; losing water will translate to losing weight, therefore it’s safe to say that green tea is the best tea for weight loss.

All in all drinking green tea is a great way to supplement the usual weight losing procedures and you should try it if you feel the need to lose weight, however it should be noted that note all brands will give the same results. For the best result use natural green tea since it’s likely to have more concentration of the antioxidants.

Apart from the weight loss benefits, the powerful antioxidants in green tea can help limit the uncontrolled growth of body cells, which is the main cause of various cancer illnesses, hence it is safe to say that people who take green tea have a lower probability of getting cancer. The catechins contained in green are known to kill bacteria and inhibit viruses, hence boosting the body’s defense system and giving you a generally healthier body.

Green tea is now one of the world’s healthiest drinks for the above reasons and many more others. It should be noted that adding milk to your cup of green tea will lower the antioxidants concentration hence making it less effective, you are therefore advised to take it pure for better health benefits.

The Importance of Physical Activity in Children

The Importance of Physical Activity in ChildrenIn this day and age, there is thankfully more and more emphasis being put on children’s development. It is extremely important that children be given a chance to develop, especially from the ages of 3 to 5. With the range of modern technology today, there is one part of children’s development that has sadly been a bit neglected – their physical development.

Although many childcare facilities have playgrounds and other amenities which allow for physical movement and development, there are very few that have some sort of arranged program which would force children to go outside (or inside) and exercise. This is largely due to the fact that even as near back as 10 years ago, children rarely had to be forced or tricked into physical activity. It would come naturally as a part of their play.

Today, an alarming number of children have mobile devices which occupy the majority of their attention. Games are played on a tablet or computer, and their favourite pastime is watching some series on Netflix.

Another major factor in this underdevelopment of children in the physical spectrum is the fact that most facilities (and parents for that matter) place emphasis on the mental development of children, organizing all kinds of classes for learning and various hobbies. While this is commendable and extremely important, it has started overshadowing the simple need for children to play and exercise their bodies.

There are some facilities which emphasize movement, and when parents make their choice, this would definitely be something to keep an eye on. Some facilities have mandatory activities where a child can choose from an array of hobbies such as dancing, some martial art, a team sport, etc. So parents take note! Make sure your child gets enough exercise! (And besides, wouldn’t it be really cute to see your little angel in a nice gi?)

Incorporating movement and activity in a child’s routine early on is a great factor in the way that child will develop in their grown lives. Research has shown that most people who are fit and healthy adults have been raised with an emphasis on the importance of exercise and a healthy diet. On the other hand, most people who are out of shape and obese can recall not being able or encouraged to exert physical activity in their childhood.

There are some situations in which this problem is not one that can be solved very easily. This is especially the case with families with single parents or both working parents who are unable to devote much time to their children and their proper physical upbringing.

In these cases, the parents should make an effort to find someone – a grandparent or friend, or a paid babysitter, to take their children out and do some physical activity. Another great idea would be to take them to a childcare facility which emphasises movement and activity, which we already covered.

Whatever the situation, you have to do whatever you can to make sure your child becomes a fully developed and happy individual!

How to Teach Students Democracy in the Classroom

How to Teach Students Democracy in the ClassroomChildren are introduced to the principles and values of democracy at home and reinforced in schools. As teachers, we play a fundamental role in educating the youth about democracy and civics. By ensuring a democratic classroom, students are better able to grasp the founding the principles of our nation.

It is ironic, however, how we emphasize the importance of democracy in a civilized society but do not really practice it in the classroom. Some schools and classrooms don’t seem to be run and managed in a democratic way. Students, especially in the high school, are often quick to voice this out.

Authoritarian vs democratic classroom

While we advocate the values of constitutional freedom, students may feel that their liberty is stifled by the school’s or classrooms’ stern authoritarian structures. Often, students attempt to test the limits of their rights by contradicting rules or airing their views.

It is a given fact that every educator possesses a different philosophy and teaching style. There are educators who manage the classroom in authoritarian way, using their power and position to dictate classroom dynamics and control their students. Unfortunately, an authoritarian structure in the classroom can disempower students, and can even suppress learning of essential skills such as critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration.

The direct opposite of an authoritarian classroom is a democratic classroom. This classroom dynamics encourages participation of students and control is not solely at the hands of the teachers or school authorities. Students are empowered to share in the responsibility of managing their classroom, thus they are more intrinsically motivated. Studies have shown that democratic classrooms are more effective in student’s learning.

Living out democracy in the classroom

Instead of just including “democracy” in teaching modules, schools and classrooms should live it. We, teachers, are at the forefront in molding the future of our nation. And we can do this by practicing democracy in the classroom and moving away from the traditional, authoritarian teaching.

The principles of democracy can be practiced in the classroom by asking students about their ideas and views. Encouraging dialogue and discussions about certain classroom issues also foster democracy. Decisions can be derived after a vote or after coming up with a consensus among the students. Perhaps, one of the most tangible ways by which students can understand democracy is through empowering student governments.

Introducing students to national issues and encouraging them to act is also an effective way of teaching democracy at school. In one of my classes, students decided to donate power tools, such as the framing nailer reviewed on, to displaced families in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. At an early age, students realize that they are part of a bigger society and the role they play in ensuring the welfare of many.

Teachers may use these concepts in varying degrees. We can also think of creative ways that can help students understand how democracy works.

In the end, our goal is to create a place where students can understand the true essence of democracy – a classroom where they can think, talk and act more democratically.

Real Simple Tips To Keep Your Kitchen Organized

Real Simple Tips To Keep Your Kitchen OrganizedThe kitchen is the heart of a home. That sounds lovely, but that isn’t always the case.

For many of us, the kitchen is a place we can’t live without – the first place you get into when you wake up and the last before you leave for school. But unfortunately, it is also the last place we ever think of tidying up. Our busy schedule seemed to be a convenient excuse for keeping the kitchen disorganized and untidy. As such, many find the kitchen a source of frustration instead of delight.

Here are a few simple, yet very effective ways for keeping the kitchen a lot more organized!

  1. Add shelves, pegs or railing on a wall. Maximize every space you have in the kitchen including the walls. A pegboard, shelf or railings enable you to store pans, pots, or utensils. Plus, they also look good.
  2. Keep trash bins under the sink to save floor space.
  3. Keep things you frequently use in the kitchen within easy reach. Dedicate a drawer for most commonly used kitchen tools, such as scissors or knives. Make sure you only store tools that you will use on a daily basis or more frequently. This way, you won’t have to mess up everywhere looking for the kitchen tool you need.
  4. Remove all items that do not belong to the kitchen. Bags, electrical fittings, CDs, books, etc. are not supposed to be in the kitchen. Clear them up.
  5. Organize your fridge. Keep foods items in zip locked plastic and label them. For a more organized storage of perishable goods, you would benefit from a vacuum sealer. Lately, I’ve been reading reviews website about the different vacuum sealers for home use.
  6. Store flat items vertically using a divider. Items such as cutting boards or cookie sheets often get buried under a stack of pans or pots. So, whenever you need them, you tend to disorganize everything and leave a heap of mess.
  7. Keep small items in little plastic bins. Bottles of cleanser, plastic baggies, and the likes can make your kitchen look cluttered.
  8. Get several uniform containers (square or rectangular shape). Place all oddly shaped items in these containers. The straight lines of these containers help prevent waste of space.
  9. Stack cans, bottles, and other grocery items neatly as soon as you arrive home. Don’t wait for later as you will end up not doing it anyway.
  10. Buy only what you need. If you have a large kitchen, buying several boxes of baking soda is not a problem, but if you have a limited space, unnecessary items can only add up to clutter. So, be sure to buy only items you need. Better yet, make a list before you go to the grocery.

Finally, de-cluttering your kitchen regularly is the best solution to your kitchen woes. Develop a habit of cleaning the kitchen at least 15 minutes every day and you’ll be surprised at the huge difference it can make. Also, investing on kitchen organization products and equipment, such as a vacuum sealer, can greatly help in your goal of maintaining a clean, clutter-free kitchen.

Tips On Health Care In Women

Tips On Health Care In WomenThe members at AFT had organized a marathon to raise awareness about women’s health.  While women play an important role in the family taking care of everyone’s health, they tend to neglect their own. To create an awareness regarding this situation, we had decided on the marathon. It got a rousing response with everyone in the neighborhood participating with zeal. During the end of the marathon, a health expert gave a very interesting and useful speech on health care tips for women. Here are a few important tips from the speech.

Regular checkups

While women are educated with high career goals and land high paid jobs, they are still as ignorant about their health as were the women in the past. Many lifestyle diseases are rampant in women because they neglect their health. A proper diet, exercise, and regular checkups help to keep many of the diseases they are prone to at bay. Vaccinations are as important for adults as they are for babies. Only when women are healthy can they take care of the family well. Even grandmothers need to have their checkups done regularly.

Eat healthy foods

It is necessary for women to pay attention to their health and diet. Giving priority to family always is not good. Women need to make healthy food choices and most importantly not stuff themselves with leftovers or excess food just to prevent it from being wasted. A proper nutritious meal is necessary. Protein rich foods should be part of the diet. Including protein supplements such as those available at is also a good choice. Milk, dairy products, pulses are all good protein sources to add to the daily diet. Eggs and meat too make up a big chunk of protein to add to your routine diet.

Adapt to change

It is important for women to adapt to the changing lifestyle patterns. Women need to listen to their bodies and try to reduce stress and be more self-confident. Working late into the night may bring good name for you at work and home, but it does not do your health any good. When you learn to combat day-to-day stresses effectively, you can relax and enjoy your life better.

Natural beauty care

With having to prepare meals, preparing the kids for school and rushing to work, morning hours can be quite busy for women to take care of their beauty. It is necessary to include as much skin care as possible. Hair care includes proper brushing, frequent washing, use of hair moisturizer and a spa treatment at least twice in a month. These help to keep your hair lustrous and healthy.

Mental health

As it is necessary to appear healthy, so is your mental health important. Just the mere absence of mental illness doesn’t indicate you are mentally healthy. With right diet and exercise, you can maintain proper mental health too. Choose foods that keep your mind in good health. Vitamins as well as minerals help to fight depression. Folate, calcium, iron, vitamin B12, Zinc, selenium, and omega 3 fatty acids help in preventing depression.
